Thicken Tempera Fresh paint

Thicken tempera paint with cornstarch.

Contemporary tempera paints are water-based and can be thickened with a water and cornstarch compound to increase their density. If you want to build up areas of tempera, you will need to thicken it, as the consistency of tempera paints out of the jar is made for direct, fluid application and is not viscous enough to hold a texture. You can mix a batch of thickener, and store the thickener you do not use in a sealed jar.

Instructions

1. Mix 4 level tbsps of cornstarch with 3 cups of water in a pot.

2. Heat the mixture over low heat, stirring it until the cornstarch dissolves.

3. Allow the mixture to cool.

4. Add the thickener to your tempera in a slow pour, stirring the paint until you get the viscosity desired. Don't add too much at once, as you will have to add a much greater quantity of paint to get it back to a thinner consistency. If you add far too much, it is may be more economical to discard the paint and start again.

5. Keep the remaining thickener in a sealed jar. Stir it well before using again.
