Michigan general contractors must be licensed by the state of Michigan.
If you have a knack for building and construction, you may wish to consider a career as a general contractor. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of jobs in the construction field are expected to grow by 19 percent from 2008 to 2018. According to PayScale, Inc., the salary range for general contractors, as of November 2010, was $51,765 to $75,015. In order to be licensed to work as a general contractor in the state of Michigan, you must obtain your credentials through the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth.
Instructions
1. Ensure that you have met all of the minimum requirements mandated by the state of Michigan. You must be at least 18 years of age, financially stable, complete prelicensing education, have reputable character in the community, submit any additional required documentation and pass the state's licensing examination.
2. Complete prelicensing education as required by the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth. You must complete a total of 60 hours of this coursework which is divided up into seven different categories. Six hours must be completed in each of these categories, while the remaining 18 hours can be chosen from a list of preapproved topics. Areas of study required by the state include business management and estimating, Michigan OSHA standards, building and design science, residential codes, marketing and sales, liability and risk management and project scheduling and management.
3. Download, complete and mail the Individual Residential Builder and Maintenance & Alteration Contractor License Application required by the state of Michigan. You must meet all of the state mandated requirements before you will be allowed to sit for the licensing exam.
4. Register to take the state licensing exams for general contractors. You can register online to take the exams through PSI Services, LLC. The fee for the exam varies depending upon how many trades you want to be licensed in. For example, you must pass a separate examination to be licensed in both roofing and carpentry. The fee to take the exam and test over only one trade is $80, while it will only cost you $90 to test in two trade areas (as of 2010).
5. Take and pass the licensing examination. The exam consists of a section on business and law in addition to whatever trade plan you choose. You must pass the business and law section before moving on to the trades section of the exam. Once you have passed the entire exam, you can pay your licensing fee of $205 (as of 2010) which will then need to be renewed every two years.
