Mount an Oil Painting
Whether you've painted a oil painting yourself or purchased one, you're ready to put it up in your home and enjoy the artwork. An oil painting can be a beautiful piece of artwork that enhances the décor of any room. Oil paintings help to give any room an artistic flair. Learn add a frame to your oil painting and mount it to a wall.
Instructions
1. Measure the size of your oil painting and get a frame. Most oil paintings come on standard canvas sizes, and frames are available from most craft and hobby shops in these sizes.
2. Place the oil painting in the back of the frame. Frames have insets in the frame in which the oil painting rests. Secure the oil painting in place by screwing in offset clips. Use at least one offset clip per side. Use three per side if it's a larger painting and feels loose after putting in the first set of clips.
3. Screw in a one strap hanger on the back of each side of the frame. The strap hangers should be placed about 1/3 of the length down from the top of the frame. These strap hangers have metal loops, which should be at the top end of the strap hangers.
4. Tie a length of hanging wire to each loop on the strap hanger by using needle nose pliers. Loop the wire five times around each loop to provide extra confidence that there will be no slippage. Cut off excess wire with diagonal cutters.
5. Pound a nail into the wall where you're going to hang the painting. Leave enough of the nail exposed to hang a wire on. It's generally a good idea to use a stud. If you're hanging on drywall only, drill a hole, push in an anchor and drive in a screw, leaving enough of the screw exposed to hang a wire.
6. Position the oil painting and frame on the wall where the mounting nail or screw is. Reach around and lower the oil painting until the hanging wire is taut atop the mounting nail or screw.
7. Let go of the painting and tilt the frame until it's level.
