When you import a photo, it means to load it into a program whose normal file format is not a photo. But to choose paint colors with which to color the photo, the program must have a painting program's functions, such as a paintbrush and paint filling tool. Programs with tools for drawing vectors meet both criteria. An advantage of coloring your photos with vectors is that you will be able to enlarge the vector version of your photo to any size with no loss of quality, in contrast to the original photo.
Instructions
Inkscape
1. Click the File menu's "Open" command, then navigate to and double-click the photo you want to edit. Inscape will import the photo.
2. Click the pencil icon on the tool palette to run the Freehand tool, which lets you draw shapes over raster graphics such as your imported photo. Running this tool is necessary for choosing a color you would like to apply to your photo.
3. Drag the mouse around the outline of a shape in your photo for which you want to choose a color, then release the mouse to create a vector shape.
4. Click the "Fill" command of the Object menu, then click a color from the color swatch at screen right. Your vector shape will fill with the color you chose.
5. Use the instructions from Steps 2 through 4 to select colors for the rest of the photo's shapes.
Word
6. Click the "Insert" tab's Picture button, then navigate to and double click a photo to import it into Word.
7. Click the squiggly icon from the Shapes button of the Insert to run the vector drawing tool, then drag around the outline of one of the shapes in your imported photo.
8. Release the mouse to fill the vector shape with a default color.
9. Right click the shape and click "Format," then click a color from the Fill drop-down list. Your shape will fill with the color you chose.
10. Repeat the previous three steps to choose colors for the remaining shapes in the imported photo.
Google Docs
11. Open your browser on the Google Docs home page, then follow the prompts to sign up for a free account if you don't already have one.
12. Click the "Create new" button on the home page of Google Docs, then click "Drawing."
13. Click the "Image" command of the Insert menu, then navigate to and double-click a photo you want to choose colors for. Google will upload the photo.
14. Click the icon to the right of the icon shaped like a backward "S" to run the Polyline tool, then drag your mouse around the outline of a shape in your photo. Double-click the mouse to fill the shape with a default color.
15. Click the white arrow from the tool palette to run the selection tool, then click the paint bucket icon on the tool palette. Click a color from the gallery that appears to fill the shape with the color.
16. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 to pick colors for and fill the remaining shapes in your photo.
