Clean the wall and trim away any vegetation before painting.
Add color to your dull, drab concrete walls by finishing them with paint. Before you tackle this type of do-it-yourself project, identify the potential pitfalls before you stumble into them. Bare, unfinished concrete is poorly suited for paint. Combat this problem by pretreating the walls with primer. If the walls are on the exterior of your home, select paint formulated to expand and contract as temperatures fluctuate, or cracking and fading are likely to result.
Instructions
1. Trim vegetation from the wall. Clean the walls using a pressure washer. Wait a full day for the concrete to dry.
2. Apply painter's tape to areas adjacent to the concrete walls. Protect the ground with heavy-duty fabric dropcloths. Don't use plastic dropcloths, as they may blow free in the wind.
3. Open the bucket of primer and stir it for three minutes, using a wooden stir stick. Pour 2 gallons of primer into a 5-gallon bucket.
4. Fasten a cover to the roller frame. Connect the roller frame to the extension pole. Slide the roller screen into the 5-gallon bucket.
5. Dip the roller into the bucket of primer. Remove dripping primer from the roller by rolling it against the screen.
6. Coat the concrete walls with acrylic latex primer, using the roller. Start in the upper-left end of the wall and roll in a vertical motion, moving from left to right.
7. Use a nylon paintbrush to apply primer to areas that proved inaccessible to the roller. Wash your roller and brush with water. Wait two hours for the primer to dry.
8. Coat the primed concrete walls with acrylic latex paint, using the clean roller. Paint the wall just as you primed it. Allow the wall to dry for two hours. Add another coat if the coverage is not adequate.
