Fresh paint An Even Finish On Wood

320-grit sandpaper ensures smooth paint coverage.

Paint comes in a variety of finishes. For a finish that is smooth but not overly slick or glossy, you'll likely want an eggshell or semi-gloss sheen. Most hardware stores have sample placards that you can touch to see what sheen is smooth enough for your purposes. Before you apply this paint to a wood surface, the wood must be properly prepped and primed. Without the right preparations, your painted finish may not turn out as planned.

Instructions

1. Sand the wood surface with 220-grit sandpaper. This is a fine-grit sandpaper capable of removing minor surface imperfections on your wood, making the surface smooth and even.

2. Wipe the wood with a damp towel to remove sandpaper dust.

3. Apply stain-blocking wood primer to the surface, using a brush or roller. This is especially important if you're painting over stained wood. Certain unstained woods, such as redwood and cedar, contain natural stains called tannins, and these will seep through primer and paint if you don't invest in a stain-blocking wood primer. Wait for the primer to dry.

4. Paint the primed wood surface with oil-base paint in your desired sheen. If you go with a smooth eggshell finish, you can use a regular paintbrush or roller. For semi-gloss finishes, it's best to use a foam brush or foam roller.

5. Paint a second coat onto the surface after the first coat dries. While it may be tempting to just apply paint to bare patches, paint the entire surface again with your second coat. If you apply the second layer sparingly, the coverage won't be as smooth and even. Wait for this coat to dry.

6. Sand the surface with 320-grit sandpaper only if it is still not smooth enough. 320-grit sandpaper is removes even tiny bumps on the surface. If you're satisfied with the smoothness of the topcoat, you don't need to sand or paint a third coat.

7. Wipe the sandpaper dust clean with a damp towel.

8. Apply a full third coat if necessary.
