Homes with an attached kitchen and sitting room represent common home designs.
A home with a sitting room attached to the kitchen represents a common home design. While this construction makes for easy access between the rooms, it also causes both rooms to lose a bit of their individuality. Your choice of paint for these two rooms will help establish the identity of each room. However, despite choosing separate colors, you must create a visual tie between the two rooms to avoid a jarring visual effect.
Instructions
1. Choose a color scheme for the two rooms. Select colors that visually complement each other in some manner. A choice of red and yellow together create a bold atmosphere, whereas blues and greens offer a more open, tranquil one. You'll use the same colors in both rooms, but in different ways. Also, select one neutral color to use for both rooms.
2. Select a paint type. If you'd like to hide some of the flaws on the walls, choose a flat paint. On the other hand, glossy or semi-glossy paints are easier to wipe clean.
3. Decide which color will be the main color for each room. For example, if you've chosen a color combination of blue and gold, select blue as the main color for the sitting room and gold for the kitchen. The leftover color becomes the accent color. In this case, you'll accent the sitting room with gold and the kitchen with blue.
4. Choose a focal wall in each room and paint it with that room's main color. Pick opposite walls that face each other if you'd like visual contrast.
5. Paint elements such as kitchen cabinets or a recessed alcove the in the living room with the room's main colors as well.
6. Coat the remaining walls in both rooms with the same neutral color.
7. Add paint to the trim areas such as the window sills and door jambs. Don't use the room's main color for this -- but rather the main color of the opposite room, which functions as the accent color. For example, if the main color in the kitchen is red, choose yellow to accent the trim; yellow is the main color in the sitting room in this case.
