Painting A Brick House

Brick is a rough surface that may be difficult to paint.

If you tire of the standard terracotta coloring of brick homes, you may consider covering your house with a vibrant coat of paint. When restoring the exterior of your home, one must consider which paint and tools to use in order to achieve the best appearance. Exterior paints offer the best waterproof protection and your local hardware store will supply any paint supplies necessary to accomplish the task of painting your home.

Instructions

1. Clean the brick thoroughly with a pressure washer. The pressure should be set between 1,500 and 2,000 psi. Higher pressures may knock loose mortar and damage brick. Use a mild soap to remove stains, and rinse the brick thoroughly to remove powdery residue. Wait two to three days for the brick to dry thoroughly.

2. Sand or brush the brick to remove loose and peeling paint from the surface. Caulk cracks and repair damaged mortar as needed.

3. Coat the prepared area with an acrylic exterior primer using a paintbrush. Alternatively, the primer and top coat of paint can be applied with a spray gun.

4. Paint the primed area with your choice of exterior paint. Either acrylic latex exterior or elastomeric paint are acceptable choices for brick painting. Elastomeric is the stronger of the two alternatives and is more suitable for waterproofing. Apply two coats of paint to the brick.
