Before painting, it is important to know how much paint you need.
Ensuring even coverage when painting anything is key to having a completed project that is consistent. No matter what you are painting -- a wall, an entire house or just something small -- some simple calculations before you get started can ensure you have enough paint to cover the area of the object you want to paint. This will help you to make wise decisions about the amount of paint you need and save you from additional trips to the paint store.
Instructions
1. Determine the shape of the room or object you will be painting. This will be useful because you need to determine the area of the job before you can determine the amount of paint you need.
2. Measure the object.
3. Determine the area by using the following formulas. Square: square the length of the side. Rectangle: multiply the width times the height. Triangle: halve the length of the base and multiply that number by the height. Circle: square the diameter of the circle and multiply times 0.7854. Cylinder: multiply the circumference of the circle times the length of the cylinder, then add the area of the two circles on either end. Sphere: square the diameter then multiply that number times 3.14.
4. Determine the square footage coverage of the paint you plan to buy. This information can be found on the paint's label.
5. Divide the square footage you calculated by the coverage per gallon as indicated on the paint label. The number you get will be the number of gallons needed.
