Home Interior Painting Ideas

Paint Selection

Paint is one of the least expensive ways to dramatically change the look of a room. There are many options available when it comes to paint colors and finish choices (matte, flat, eggshell, pearl, semi-gloss, high gloss) and many fun painting ideas to choose from. Painting accent walls in a room has become popular, as has striping the wall in two tones of a single color. The finish of the paint you choose is also important and will depend on the room and look of that space.

Accent Walls

Dining Room

An accent wall is one wall in a room that you paint a different color from the other walls. The precaution when doing an accent wall is to make sure that it is the focal point of that room, as having two focal points in a room is confusing to the eye. You may want the accent wall to be behind the bed, almost creating an extended head board, especially for a child's room. The accent color should stand out and be more dramatic then the surrounding walls. Another idea for an accent wall could be in a dining room on the wall that has a niche or a special piece of furniture that you want to show off.

Striping a Wall

Striping a wall with one paint color but two different finishes is a subtle but dramatic look. This style can be for a dining room or even a bedroom, depending on the color that you choose. The way it works is to select your color and then purchase two versions of it: have the first color made with a matte finish and the second color made with a high-gloss finish. Paint the matte finish paint on the wall first and then, when it is completely dry, tape the walls into a striped pattern and paint every other stripe with the high-gloss paint. Pull the tape off when the paint is dry and you have a fantastic looking room.

Finish Options

Paint Choices

When you are at the paint store, it is important to ask the staff for the finish options that they have for their paint. Many paint stores have come up with different names for finishes. Flat and matte finishes are similar; they have no shine to them and they easily scuff when painted on a wall. The one good aspect of matte and flat paint is that they can be touched up easily once on the wall. Eggshell finish has a little shine, and then there is pearl, which has just a touch more. Semigloss is good for bathrooms and kitchens because it is washable, and gloss is used for painting molding and baseboards.
