Create A Beautiful Floor From Plywood

Although you can paint low-grade plywood like this, cabinet-grade plywood will supply a smoother finish.

Whether you're on a budget or you already have a plywood floor that you want to spruce up, you can turn a plywood floor into a beautiful floor that fits your personality. To turn basic plywood into a beautiful floor you'll love, paint it. You can paint plywood in any style you'd like, including a wood grain or checked tile, to create the look you want. You're only limited in your painted floor design by your own imagination.

Instructions

1. Fill any cracks, nail holes, gaps between boards or other imperfections in the plywood with paintable wood filler. Let the filler dry completely.

2. Sand the entire surface of the floor smooth with 250-grit sandpaper. Wipe it down with a damp cloth to remove any dust. Let it dry completely.

3. Cover the baseboards and anything else you don't want to get paint on, using painter's tape.

4. Apply one to two coats of primer on the floor, using a paint roller. Let the primer dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

5. Apply at least one coat of your base coat of paint. If you're painting a design on the floor, apply the lighter-colored painted first across the entire floor. If you're trying to make your floor look like wood, start with the darker color.

6. Use painter's tape to tape off your design, if you're creating one.

7. Apply the second coat of paint to the correct areas within the taped design with a paintbrush or a small paint roller, if you're creating a design.

Apply a coat of an equal mixture of acrylic glaze and white latex paint with a foam roller, if you're creating a faux wood look. Glide a paint comb all the way along one end of the room to avoid having to cut in at the top. Create a "plank" design using a curved graining rocker, available at most home improvement stores.

8. Let the paint dry completely once you've finished painting the entire floor.

9. Apply any last minute details, such as a third paint color or lines to represent the edges of the actual planks. Let the third paint color dry, if necessary.

10. Apply two to three coats of polyurethane over the entire floor, using a paint roller. Let the polyurethane dry for at least 48 hours or according to the manufacturer's instructions before you walk on the surface of the floor.
