Popular Exterior Fresh paint Colors

Choose a historically accurate, contemporary or simply favorite exterior color scheme.

Choose an exterior color scheme for your home by basing choices on several notions. The age and architecture of your home may cry out for historical accuracy, where the home in the country is more quiet and comfortable when camouflaged into natural surroundings. Blend into the neighborhood or make a plan to stand out in a crowd. Your choice of exterior paint colors can serve to achieve any desired effect.

Suburban Modern

If you are a homeowner who does not mind your home getting noticed, choose a bold palette reminiscent of an optimistic 1950's eye on the future. In terms of colors, think George Jetson meets 2010. Choose an exterior palette of jeweled jade with a white or beige trim. To go a bit darker and tamer, choose rich tan for your base with trim in powder blue or light sage green. Give your home a suburban yet tropical feel by thinking no further than a richly hued tropical coral with dark coffee brown trim.

Classic Colonial

If adhering to preservationist style is more to your liking, select a palette of classic, colonial colors. Pick soft yellows trimmed with a natural stone green or dark colonial shades of brown stone accented with tan or an off-white that leans towards soft pink. Colonial blues and classic whites can fall into this scheme as well. These color schemes are safe but also timeless.

Existing Color Palette

This Old House home experts recommend choosing an exterior paint based on the existing colors or materials established on your house. For instance, if you are starting with a home made predominately of stone, choose bold but complementary door and trim colors that will highlight your home's natural materials.

For homes built out of pale colored brick, choose a solid paint color a shade lighter than existing brick to give your house an instant color lift. Trim with a dark rich color so the house does not fade into the landscape.

Choose colors found opposite each other on a color wheel. A muted or moss green house with a purposely faded red door makes a warm statement. Both colors are achieved by adding gray to the base colors that might otherwise appear garish.
