Gift baskets can be filled with local favorites to give out-of-towners a sense of the area.
It can be a little nerve-wracking when out-of-town guests come for a visit, as the host wants their guests to enjoy the house and surrounding area as much as possible. One way to show guests some of your favorite spots around town is to put together a gift basket full of food, reading materials and other items that highlight the area.
Food Items
If the host lives in an area that is known for a food item --- like buckeyes in Ohio, blueberries in Maine or chocolate covered coffee beans in Seattle --- make sure to include it in the gift basket. Also include food items from favorite cafes and restaurants around town. Examples of these include chocolates, pastries or jerky. Hosts can even include a small $10 gift card for guests to pick up a sandwich to eat on the way back home.
Reading Material
Some areas are known for a historic event that may be interesting background, especially if you take your guests to visit a historic site. This allows the guests to actively take an interest in the surrounding area without feeling uninformed or overwhelmed.
Other Items
Include a coffee mug from your favorite coffee shop or an ale glass with your favorite bar logo. Also consider including lovely hand-made soaps from a local artisan and a pretty hand cloth from a nearby shop. A picture frame with the name of the town is also a nice addition to any basket. Try adding personal touches to the gift basket like yarn for the woman who likes to knit or a small hand-bound book of crossword puzzles from the local newspaper.

Find a small basket that will fit all the items. Using puff paint, write the name of the town and the year the guests have visited. Place all the items inside the basket and tie a ribbon along the top. Put the basket in the room where the guests will be staying.
