A spray gun provides a good-quality finish in a lot less time than conventional hand-painting methods. It is also very cost effective once you get over the initial expense of purchasing the sprayer. A high-volume, low-pressure (HVLP) paint sprayer uses less paint to cover the same area as hand-painting would. HVLP guns don't make sense for everyone. If you are only painting a small area and don't plan to use the sprayer often, you might be better off hand-painting or even use cans of spray paint.
Instructions
1. Completely cover anything that you don't want painted. Use plastic sheeting and low-tack painter's tape to cover nearby items. Paint spray tends to travel and will mar any nearby surface. If possible, move outdoors.
2. Mix the paint with paint thinner. Consult the directions that are included with your paint sprayer to determine the ratios of paint to thinner.
3. Put on a mask and goggles to protect yourself from paint fumes. Open as many windows and doors as possible to create ventilation.
4. Fill the canister of the paint sprayer and close tightly. Set the compressor at 50 psi to start, and turn it on. Set the paint distribution at the middle setting. This setting will differ depending on your sprayer.
5. Lay out a piece of scrap plywood and test to see if you have the correct settings. Adjust the psi and the volume until you like the distribution and coverage of the paint. Find a setting that allows even coverage without drips.
6. Spray the object to be painted with a steady back-and-forth motion. Slightly overlap each pass of the sprayer. Too much overlap may cause drips and runs. Let the paint dry. Apply a second coat if necessary.
