Your labor cost may be higher if you need to use particularly toxic paint.
The labor cost of painting is one of those things that can vary immensely by something as small as the neighborhood being painted in. Low ball prices are extremely common among painters who use subpar materials. Unfortunately this still affects the pricing of honest painters. Keep in mind that labor costs (usually charged hourly) are separate from the cost of painting unless you are charging by the job.
Instructions
1. Find out what your competition is charging for their labor. The lowest charge is probably bid by painters with very little experience or who use bad quality materials.
2. Add up your living expenses to figure out the minimum you need to be paid. Remember to include meals, gas, work, rent, utilities and so on. You won't pay all of these things with one job but they should help you decide how much you need to make each month. Divide that amount by the number of hours you want to work and that will give you the amount you want to be paid per hour.
3. Consider the type of materials you will be using. If you need to use acids to remove the old paint for example, you may want to adjust your price up in case of accidents.
4. Take all of these aspects into consideration to decide on your price. Don't overprice the job. A tractor should probably be priced by the job, not the hour, so you should add the labor cost (your wage per hour multiplied by the estimated amount of hours) to the cost of materials to get the price of the job. If the owner supplies the materials you should only price by the labor, which will be the minimum you need to make to pay expenses plus a bit extra. Ideally you should fall around the middle of the range of painters in your area. Price too low and people may think you do bad quality work; price too high and you risk not getting jobs.
