You can make your aluminum window exterior blend in with the rest of your house by finishing it with paint. Unfortunately, if you do not prepare the aluminum, prior to application, your final finish will eventually fail. Because aluminum windows are not suited for adhesion, they require a special base primer, capable of abrading the metal. Exterior aluminum is subject to harsh weather. Select the correct type of paint or the new finish will not endure.
Instructions
1. Use a sponge to wash the aluminum window exterior with a degreasing cleanser. Rinse the exterior, using a hose. Allow the aluminum to dry for two hours.
2. Protect surfaces below the aluminum exterior with fabric drop cloths. Apply painter's tape to areas adjacent to the aluminum, including the glass.
3. Use a polyester brush to coat the aluminum window exterior with metal etching primer. Remove the painter's tape from the window glass immediately after applying the primer. Don't remove tape from the other areas. Allow the aluminum exterior to dry for three hours.
4. Wash the metal primer from the brush, using water.
5. Paint the aluminum window exterior just as you primed it. Remove all of the painter's tape immediately after applying the finish. Allow the aluminum exterior to dry for three hours.
6. Scrape paint from the glass, using a razor blade.
