Exterior stucco is a coating that consists of aggregate, water and adhesive. It generates profound texture on plain surfaces like concrete, cinder block and brick. If you need to paint old exterior stucco, you should consider two factors. First, because the stucco is old, you will need to dedicate a large amount of time to removing loose pieces of aggregate, or they may break off and become embedded in your roller during the application process. Second, because stucco is heavily textured, it promotes splattering, so you will need to use care during the preparation and application process to prevent messes.
Instructions
1. Clean the old exterior stucco using a pressure washer. Focus pressure to try to remove any loose pieces of aggregate. Allow the surface to dry completely.
2. Protect any areas you do not want painted by covering them with painter's tape. Protect larger areas like sidewalks, driveways and porches with fabric drop cloths.
3. Sand over the old stucco using a palm sander loaded with 300-grit sandpaper. Sand lightly, concentrating on bits of aggregate that appear loose.
4. Apply primer to the stucco using the roller. Apply vertically. Roll slowly to avoid splattering paint. Dip the roller often to promote adequate coverage. Allow the primer to dry for two hours.
5. Wash all painting tools with water.
6. Apply two coats of exterior acrylic latex paint to the stucco in the same way you did the primer. Allow two hours of dry time between coats.
