Incorrectly installing
hangers leads to extensive plaster repairs.
The hard nature of plaster offers challenges when you are installing hardware to hang pictures on plastered walls. Incorrectly installing a fastener causes large areas of plaster to crack and pull away from the lathe holding the plaster to the wall. This leads to expensive repairs to plaster walls and even well done repairs are visible after paint. One hanging technique eliminates the force of hammering on plaster and reduces the amount of damage caused to the walls of your home.
Instructions
1. Make a pencil mark on the surface of the wall at the location you need to hang the picture.
2. Select a drill bit that matches the diameter of a wood screw. Lock the drill bit in the chuck of a drill motor.
3. Align the tip of the drill bit with the pencil mark you placed on the wall. Depress the trigger of the drill motor to drill through the plaster without using excessive pressure on the drill motor. Stop drilling when the drill bit enters the lathe behind the plaster wall coating.
4. Push the end of the wood screw into the drilled hole.
5. Turn the wood screw clockwise with a Phillips screwdriver until the head of the screw sits 1/8 to 3/16 inch off the surface of the wall.
