Coordinate paint colors for a kitchen and dining area that share a common wall.
In open floor plans, the kitchen and dining room often share a common wall. This layout presents a challenge when selecting colors for decorating, but there is no need to paint both areas the same hue. Choose one of these flexible color palettes to define each area while combining them into a cohesive space.
A Combination of Neutrals
Neutrals that work together in a wardrobe can also coordinate your kitchen and dining spaces. Khaki, olive and tan pull the two spaces together with earthy warmth. For a cool and sophisticated combination, use shades of gray with hints of blue or violet in them. In either case, choose a medium tone for the common wall, with lighter or darker tones for the rest of the space. Painting the kitchen cabinets in the same color as the common wall works to further tie the spaces together.
Tints and Shades of the Same Hue
You may be drawn to a hue in a window treatment, rug or accessory in your space. Consult a paint fan or visit a paint store or home improvement center for a range of tints and shades of that hue. Select a medium tone for the common wall and lighter or darker tones in the rest of the space. By repeating the medium tone on cabinets or bar stools and painting baseboards and other trim a light tint of the hue, you can further coordinate the spaces.
Analogous Colors
Choose colors that appear close to one another on a color wheel for easy coordinating in your space. The reason that citrus colors of lime, lemon and orange work well together is that they have yellow in common. Let them pull together your kitchen and dining areas for a fresh, inviting look, or use a group of greens and blues or other analogous combination. Consider shades as well as tints of those hues. Repeat hues from the kitchen on the common wall through art, or paint or stencil a multicolor graphic.
A Pair of Pale Complements
Using light tints of hues that appear opposite each other on a color wheel creates a pleasing but out-of-the-ordinary combination. Pale green with pale orange-red or pale violet with pale yellow are interesting without being jarring. For any pair that you choose, repeat each color in both the dining and kitchen areas. For example, paint dining chairs a pale green to contrast with a pale orange-red common wall. In the kitchen, paint a wall pale green and the cabinets orange-red.
