Making Cabinets Look Whitewashed

Whitewashed wood remains transparent.

Whitewashing is a process by which paint is applied to wood, thereby creating a white, transparent coating to the wood. This process is completed through various steps of preparation and finishing, which will produce a "whitewash" affect. You can whitewash your cabinets, regardless of your experience, in one to two days, depending on the size and scope of the project.

Instructions

1. Sand the wood with 60-grit sandpaper to remove old paint. Fill in cracks and holes with wood filler, and allow it to dry for 30 minutes. Sand the wood further with 80-grit sandpaper attached to an orbital sander.

2. Paint the cabinets with white latex paint. Apply three coats of paint, allowing only 15 minutes of drying time between coats. When 15 minutes have transpired after each coat, wipe over the paint with a damp cotton cloth. Make sure that the rag is not dripping wet but wet enough to thin the paint on the surface of the cabinets, revealing the wood grain. Repeat this process after each coat.

3. Allow the final coat of whitewash to dry for six hours before proceeding. If there are white areas that are too dark, lightly sand them with 220-grit sandpaper. Rub the dried paint with #0000 steel wool. Rub along the wood grain rather than against. Continue rubbing until the surface is smooth.

4. Spray on three coats of matte-finish clear coat. Add the finish to an electric sprayer. Hold the sprayer 12 to 16 inches away from the cabinet surface, and spray from left to right rather than up and down. Allow 30 minutes of drying time between coats, and rub the surface with #0000 steel wool between coats, as well.
