Use Oil Based Interior Fresh paint

Oil-based paint, also called an alkyd paint, has a thick consistency that allows easier coverage of a rough surface than a latex paint. An oil-based paint provides a longer-lasting and more durable surface that makes easy cleanup where grimy hand prints are a problem. Working with oil-based interior paint does have some disadvantages. It has an odor that lingers after the paint is dry, it requires paintbrushes designed for oil painting and its cleanup requires toxic solvents.

Instructions

Preparation

1. Contact the local environmental department before painting and ask dispose of oil paint and tools tainted with oil paint.

2. Place oil-based paints away from open flames. Make sure the room being painted is well-ventilated.

3. Designate an area for immediate cleanup after painting. Collect plenty of clean rags to use during painting and cleanup.

Painting

4. Sand uneven and glossy surfaces so they will accept the oil-based primer more smoothly. Wipe down the surface with a damp cloth to remove grit and debris.

5. Paint the surface using a primer designed for oil-based paint. Allow to dry per the manufacturer's instructions.

6. Remove the paint can lid and mix any oil sitting on top back into the paint by using a stir stick provided by the paint store.

7. Apply the paint and allow each coat 8 to 24 hours to dry. Use brushes and rollers designed for oil-based paints.

8. Clean brushes, rollers and pans immediately with paint thinner or turpentine.

9. Dispose of rags per the instructions of the local environmental department. Cap all paint tightly before storing.
