Recreate the elaborate colors of the Victorian era.
The Victorian era, which lasted from 1837 until 1901, was characterized by romantic, elaborate architectural detail and a passion for form over function. Houses built during this era are characterized by gingerbread cutouts, spindled porch railings and bright accent colors. Victorian houses were often painted whimsical colors like green, pink, purple or yellow, with bright accent colors, making them seem somewhat whimsical compared to the often conservative house colors of today. Give a Victorian dollhouse the charm of the beautiful era after which it was modeled with a bright paint job.
Instructions
1. Choose your paint colors from an historic paint collection, such as Valspar's collection created in cooperation with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, or Sherwin William's Victorian House collection. If you wish to use acrylic paints from a craft store, you can pick up color samples from the paint store and use them for a reference when shopping. Acrylic paint is easy to work with on small surfaces, like a dollhouse.
2. Cover any trim work with painter's tape. Paint the main color onto your house with a medium-sized brush. Make the brush strokes in the same direction. Let the first coat of paint dry completely, and add a second coat of paint. Let paint dry and cure, usually for about 24 hours, before painting the trim.
3. Remove the tape from the trim. Put tape around the trim. Using a smaller paintbrush, paint the trim on the dollhouse. Let it dry completely, and add a second coat. Let it dry, and remove all painter's tape.
4. Use a spray top coat to protect the paint job. Hold the spray can about 6 inches away from the doll house, and spray while moving the can steadily across for an even coat. This will protect your paint job, which is especially important for a dollhouse that will be played with often.
