Garage Floor Painting Costs

Transform your garage floor for just a few hundred dollars.

Garage-floor paint can instantly brighten a workspace while simultaneously protecting a garage floor from oil, gas and other messy spills. With a variety of garage-floor coating paints to choose from and multiple other factors to consider, the price range can vary, but most garage floors can be transformed for just a few hundred dollars.

Measurements

Before calculating the costs of garage-floor paint, an accurate measurement is essential. Calculate the square footage by multiplying the length in feet by the width in feet. Garage-floor paint kits vary in coverage, but the average is usually between 200 to 300 square feet. For larger garages, two or more kits may be needed to cover the floor. Starting a project with enough paint will save time and ensure an even finish.

Product Options

Several brands of garage-floor paint are available and costs vary slightly. QUIKRETE and Rust-Oleum cover about 250 square feet and are available at Lowe's and Home Depot, respectively, for around $65. Weatherbeater, sold at Sears, covers 300 to 350 square feet and costs just under $60. These products can also be found on Amazon.com and other Internet sites and home improvement stores.

Tools

Before beginning a project, be sure to purchase a paint roller, paint tray and painter's tape. A respirator, disposable latex gloves and goggles are needed for protection from harsh chemicals. These items can usually be purchased at a paint store or home improvement store for under $10 each.

Preparation

Clearing the garage floor, cleaning and taping will likely be time-consuming, but these steps are essential. Overlooking preparation leads to sloppy results. In the long run it may cost even more time and money if the paint needs to be redone the next year. Most garage-floor paint kits come with a cleaner for the garage floor. If a garage floor is especially dirty, a pressure washer can help remove the grime. Check rental costs at a local home improvement store.

Time Investment

The most time-consuming step to painting a garage floor is usually the preparation. Plan for at least one hour, but probably several if there is a lot to clear out of the garage. Cleaning time will vary depending on how much use the floor has endured. Once the garage-floor paint has been mixed, it must be applied within two hours. With the exception of very large garages, this time frame is manageable. The garage floor will dry quickly but should be allowed two days to cure completely.

Professional Contractor Costs

When hiring a contractor to paint a garage floor, get several estimates. Give the contractor the garage-floor measurements and detailed information on the type of paint to be used and the condition of the garage floor. This information will help him give an accurate quote. Estimates may vary between $1,500-$3,000 or more depending on the garage size, the paint type and how much the contractor charges for labor.

A homeowner can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars painting a garage floor by himself. Still, if you decide to hire a contractor, do not hesitate to search around and negotiate to find the best price.
