This style of home often has a welcoming, yet exotic feel with a high level of curb appeal. If you are designing a new home from top to bottom, aim for a total Mediterranean experience from the interior to the landscape.
Exterior
The exteriors of many Mediterranean homes are characterized by architectural forms such as arches, columns and shallow, sloping roofs. When all of these are added in some form to your home design, it will begin to take on an authentic feel. Finish the outside with stucco and paint in an earth tone such as beige, eggshell or tan. For a bolder look, go for a pale orange or red. Be sure to include terra cotta roof tiles. Add a brick path leading up to the door that matches the roof tiles. Homes in this style may include intricate tile work designs above the front door. Consider personalizing the tile design by including your family crest in the center. Accent your windows with black wrought-iron flourishes.
Interior
The interiors of Mediterranean homes tend to be open and airy. Design your house with high ceilings and large windows for optimal natural light. Incorporate arched doorways and hall entries throughout the interior. Use dark wood doors for a natural feel. Paint the walls light colors such as white, yellow or pale blue. If you aren't afraid to use bright colors, paint one room azure blue to represent the colorful Mediterranean waters and one room green to represent the landscape. Opt for richly colored ceramic tile to cover the floors.
Outdoor Space
The design of your outdoor space can make a big difference in creating an authentic Mediterranean feel at your new home. Mediterranean climates are generally mild, and homes often place an emphasis on indoor and outdoor living. In a back or side yard, add a stone patio with four Greek columns, one for each corner. Use the columns to support a wood pergola. Decorate the patio with wrought-iron furniture. Surround your house with a low stucco wall topped with terra cotta tile, mimicking the design of your house. Terraced gardens are often found in houses of this style. If your yard space allows for it, add a vegetable garden on one level and a flower garden on the other. Plant authentic Mediterranean herbs and vegetables such as artichokes and basil.
