Typically, the label on the can of the paint you're using will note how long it takes for the paint to dry, but the actual drying time can vary depending on a number of factors. In fact, it's possible for latex paints to remain sticky or tacky indefinitely--a problem called "blocking." If your paint never seems to dry, applying auto or paste wax to the area may help. (You may need to reapply it if the stickiness returns.) Remember that drying is not the same as curing. Curing is the point at which you can wash spots off surfaces without damaging the paint. Curing takes approximately 30 days.
Average Drying Time
Most latex paints applied at room temperature will be dry enough to touch in one hour. However, you should wait four to six hours before applying another coat of paint.
Ventilation
Greater air circulation equals shorter drying time. Circulation can be increased by using fans on a low setting or turning on ceiling fans. If it's warm outside, open any windows.
Temperature
The colder the room is, the longer it will take for latex paint to dry.
Humidity
The lower the humidity, the faster latex paint dries. Humidity is essentially water in the air, and water inhibits the drying process.
Thickness of Paint Coat
Paint that's applied thickly takes longer to dry. Two or more thin coats are better than one thick coat.
Testing
Try this test an hour or two after painting. Place your hand on a painted surface that you know for certain is dry. Note how warm it feels. Then place your hand on the newly painted surface. If it feels colder to the touch, it's not dry.
