My Exterior Fresh paint Isn't Drying out

Wet paint can take weeks to fully dry.

The best time to apply exterior paint is when temperatures are moderate and conditions are predicted to be dry for awhile. Dry conditions help exterior paint to dry and cure quickly. Wet conditions such as a sudden rainstorm or high humidity can prevent paint from drying. If your paint has remained tacky and moist long after you applied it, temperature may be part of the problem. However, the problem also could be the paint itself. Low-quality paint -- especially when applied in thick layers -- takes a long time to dry completely.

Instructions

1. Wait for the paint to dry. Exterior paint on a house or other structure will simply dry as fast as it's going to dry. No amount of fanning or blow-drying will make it dry faster. You can hope that the weather remains warm and dry, and touch the surface of the paint from time to time to check on its progress until it no longer feels tacky or soft. This may take weeks.

2. Clean up any mold or mildew from the dry paint. Mold is a common problem with paint that has remained moist and shaded for a prolonged time. Resist the temptation to paint directly over it. Mold and mildew can grow underneath a paint layer. Instead, wipe the mold up with a 10 percent bleach solution to kill it. If any stain is left behind, paint over it.

3. Observe the dried paint job for any physical flaws. Paint that takes too long to dry may develop wrinkles, bubbles or other physical deformities. If this happens, sand down the flawed section of paint and repaint it. If the damage is too extensive, your best bet may be to sand the paint and apply a more suitable paint in drier weather.
