Making a scary homemade haunted house is a great project for community events or private parties. Planning and preparation can yield a profitable fund-raiser or make an interesting alternative to traditional Halloween parties. To create a scary haunted house, preparation is as critical as the execution.
Instructions
1. Select the location for the haunted house and plan out the direction visitors will go through the house. Designate exit points with exit signs. Position fire extinguishers in designated locations and mark the location clearly with fluorescent spray paint or signage.
2. Use black paint or black plastic to cover walls and windows. Temporary walls should be used to divide large spaces into more confined pathways.
3. Create individual haunted rooms in the house using assorted props such as fog machines, mannequins, fake blood and spiderwebs. Add black lighting to each room.
4. Run wiring and speakers for a sound system for special effects sounds or music into each room of the haunted house.
5. Mark pathways with duct tape or fluorescent spray paint so visitors can make their way through the house. Use directional arrows or warnings of low ceilings or steps to alert visitors of potential hazards.
6. Position staff at various points throughout the house dressed in costumes and armed with haunted house props.
7. Additional staff should be clearly identifiable to provide assistance to visitors if necessary.
8. Distribute radio-controlled communication and flashlights to all staff before opening the haunted house to visitors.
