Many homeowners paint their houses with historic color schemes.
A historic home has an air of tradition about it. To emphasize the age and historical quality of the house, the homeowner can paint the house in historically accurate colors. There are many different color schemes available, which are in accordance with different historical eras. Historic Craftsman homes refers to an American architectural style popular around the turn of the 20th century. Craftsman homes generally feature hand-crafted stone or wood work as well as modern geometric motifs inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Exterior Colors
Aficionados of the Craftsman style often prized the importance of nature and the organic. Houses made during this movement often use earthy hues on the exterior--these tones allow the house to appear as part of its surrounding natural environment. Fawn browns, muted peaches and grayish browns also display the architectural details of these houses, allowing form and shape to come to the foreground instead of focusing on riotous color schemes.
Interior Colors
Craftsman interiors continued the emphasis on simple and handmade details, but with greater variety in color schemes. While many continued with interior palettes of pale browns, others went with muted green and blue color schemes. Craftsman walls also often featured abstract floral and vegetal designs--similar to Art Nouveau (a movement that followed the Arts and Crafts movement) but Craftsman designs were smaller and simpler.
Accents
For owners of Craftsman homes, the accents, such as moldings and window frames, often allow for bolder colors than the main exterior and interior walls. While many homeowners choose much darker versions of the main hue, it's also possible to go with a bold tomato-red or pale pink to add color and zest to house.
