Remove Old Exterior Fresh paint

Learn remove old exterior paint.

Exterior paints are often used to define and improve the architectural features and appearances of homes. Temperature fluctuations, humidity and weathering cause exterior paints to blister, crack and eventually peel off wood. Many homeowners remove old exterior paints for appearance and restoration purposes. Since paints manufactured before 1970 often contain lead, take extra safety precautions during removal to prevent inhaling lead dust. Certain supplies and techniques are effective at removing old exterior paints.

Instructions

1. Lay landscaping fabric on the ground next to the foundation. Turn off any ventilation systems in the home, including window air conditioners and fans.

2. Cover all vents, air intakes, windows and doorways with polyethylene sheeting. Seal the edges of the sheeting with duct tape.

3. Put on disposable paper coveralls, rubber gloves, safety goggles and a respirator. Lightly mist the old paint with water from a garden hose.

4. Scrape all loose, peeling and chipping paint with a wire brush. Do not try to scrape intact paint. Make sure the paint chips are falling on the landscaping fabric, not the ground.

5. Spray the wall with water from the garden hose. Lightly sand the scraped area with fine-grade sandpaper to remove any remaining loose paint.

6. Put the landscaping fabric with the paint chips in a heavy-duty garbage bag. Contact your local environmental health office for proper disposal procedures.
