Create A Launch Pad From Paper

Rockets take off from launch pads.

Space, rocket ships and NASA shuttles fascinate many children. Build your child a launch pad out of paper to show them how shuttles take off into space. Show your child videos of shuttles and talk to them about the history of space exploration. When you are finished, present the launch pad to your child and show them lean their shuttle against it. Use high quality card stock if their shuttle is very heavy.

Instructions

1. Measure and mark one inch from the short end of a piece of white 8 ½ by 11-inch paper.

2. Fold along that mark to make the tab.

3. Measure 1½ inches from the fold and make a mark. Measure another 1½ inches form that mark and make another mark. Repeat for another 1½ inches.

4. Draw a vertical line down each mark and fold along that line.

5. Put glue along the tab. Bring the tab toward the other short side of the paper and press the tab against the paper. This will form a rectangular tube.

6. Draw a circle on the center of a piece of white paper. Draw crosshairs in the middle of the circle.

7. Place the folded paper tower next to the circle.

8. Cut four paper tabs out of another piece of paper that are two inches by one inch.

9. Put glue on one side of the tabs and press one half of it against the bottom of one of the sides of the tower and the other half against the bottom of the launch pad.

10. Repeat the process with the other three sides of the tower to secure it to the base.
