Repaint shutters to increase curb appeal.
Give the exterior of your home an updated appearance by repainting your window shutters. Over time, the condition of your shutters will deteriorate due to outside elements such as wind, rain and sunlight. Shutters start to fade, which leads to an aged appearance that can decrease the curb appeal of your home. Vinyl shutters require repainting approximately every five years, while wood shutters require a new paint job every two years. Use a paint sprayer or canned spray paint to repaint shutters and improve the appearance of your home.
Instructions
1. Choose your paint. Take into consideration the material of your shutters. Choose acrylic paint that contains urethane resins for vinyl shutters. For wood shutters, use exterior latex paint.
2. Use a screwdriver to remove the shutters from the house. Store the screws in the same container to avoid misplacing them.
3. Use a paint scraper to remove peeling paint. If the scraper does not sufficiently remove the old paint, use a liquid paint stripper. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the proper application method.
4. Combine hot water and soap in a bucket. Use a scrub brush to remove dirt and debris. Rinse the shutters with a garden hose. Place the shutters on a drop cloth. Allow the shutters to air dry. To avoid damage to wood shutters, towel dry immediately after rinsing.
5. Use 120-grit sandpaper to roughen up the surface of the shutters for optimal paint adhesion. Wipe away debris with a tack cloth. The tacky material of the cloth will remove even the tiniest particles.
6. Lay the shutters onto a drop cloth in a shady area. Start at the top of the shutter and spray primer in a side-to-side motion. Consult the manufacturer's instructions for proper drying times. For vinyl shutters, use an exterior latex primer. For wood shutters, choose an oil-based primer.
7. Hold the paint sprayer 10 to 12 inches from the surface. Start at the top corner and apply an even layer of paint, working in a smooth, side-to-side motion. Avoid stopping the flow of the side-to-side motion in the middle of painting, as this will cause paint to drip. Allow to dry.
8. Apply a second coat in the same manner as the first. Allow to dry thoroughly.
9. Use a screwdriver to reattach the repainted shutters to the house.
