Consider your child's personality when you decorate his room.
Disney characters and princess themes are all perfectly acceptable ways in which to decorate a child's room, but they are usually lacking in personality. Instead of using the same theme as hundreds of other children, take your child's personality into account when deciding decorate her room. Whether your child is a budding artist or an outdoor enthusiast, redo her room to reflect her taste and style.
Animal Lover
For the future veterinarian in the house, a room filled with stuffed animals becomes an ideal decorating scheme. Gather dozens of stuffed animals from his own collection and get donations from relatives to fill in any gaps. Sew small curtain rings on the backs of the stuffed animals' heads. Attach small picture hangers all over the walls and hang the animals as wall decorations. Add a row of small stuffed animals over each curtain rod and center a large fluffy example in the middle of the door. Your child can easily remove the animals from the walls at playtime, then return them when it's time to clean his room.
Budding Artist
Many children get in trouble for drawing on the walls, but yours won't if you paint her room in chalkboard paint. Cover one wall, or the bottom half of all the walls, with two coats of chalkboard paint. Make the paint by mixing 1 cup leftover dark paint with 2 tbsp. leftover tile grout. Allow the paint to cure and dry for three days, then rub chalk all over the surface and erase. Supply your child with leftover sidewalk chalk from the yard and flannel rags for erasers.
Games Lover
Delight your game-loving child with a board game themed bedroom. Search your attic or basement for unused board games, or check with grandparents to find any older games in storage. Use craft glue to adhere pawns, dice and money onto the boards, as if there were a game in play. Hang these boards on the walls and ceiling as wall sculpture. Glue paper money to lampshades and thin cotton curtains and replace drawer pulls with chess pieces, checkers or other game pieces.
Outdoorsy
Create heaven on earth for your favorite little camper by turning his room into the great outdoors. Take out the bed and install a pop-up tent filled with an air mattress and sleeping bag, or create a tent from sheets and curtain hooks over the existing bed. Check government websites for free nature posters like water posters from the Environmental Protection Agency or print out nature pictures from free photo sites to hang on the walls.
