A neutral color, like brown, is one option for your home's exterior.
Painting the exterior of your home can help increase your home's value and curb appeal. Choose a color that fits the style and feel or your neighborhood, and if you're planning to sell your house any time soon, make sure you keep prospective buyers in mind as well when you choose your paint color.
Make It Match
If you have other exterior elements, such as rocks or brick on the exterior of your home, choose outdoor colors for your home that work with these elements. Pair warmer shades, like yellow, or neutral shades, like brown or white, with brick. Go cooler with your color pairings if your home exterior features gray rocks. Stick with light blues, other grays or a brighter complementary color, such as a deeper red.
Stay Neutral
For a home that's sure to appeal to prospective buyers, stay neutral with your exterior color choices. White exterior walls with black trim create a classic look. If bright white isn't for you, try another shade, such as an ecru, off-white or bone shade to add a little depth to the look, or pair a shade of neutral brown with another earthy tone like olive. To add a little color to the look, paint the trim a brighter color, such as blue, red or green. The color you choose for the trim will depend on the color you chose for your walls.
Warm It Up
To brighten up a bland exterior, warm up your home by choosing outdoor colors from the warm side of the color wheel. Paint the exterior walls of your home a shade of yellow or a deep red, if it works with your home's location. Add white trim to a yellow exterior to keep the look from overpowering the space. You can use warm shades in completely warm color palettes, or mix it up a bit and work warms in with other earthy tones, such as tans, deep greens and browns.
Keep Cool
For a relaxing look both inside and out, stick with cool colors for your home's exterior. Shades of blue, purple and most greens are all cool colors. Paint your walls a pale blue and add trim in a deeper midnight shade. To create a more feminine look, apply a coat of periwinkle or light lavender paint and use a light trim color, such as white, to keep the color from looking too dark.
Use Opposites
If you want your home to really stand out, use opposites, or complementary colors on the color wheel, to paint your home. Pair yellow walls with blue trim, or deep red walls with green trim to create a complementary look. When working with complementary colors, you can also add a third basic neutral color to the mix to paint detail work, hardware and other small items.
