Ventless fireplaces don't burn logs, they use clean-burning gels or gas.
Ventless fireplaces burn energy-efficient gel or gas fuels in a small, contained space. This space does not need exhaust vents because the fuel is clean-burning and does not emit smoke. According to Ventless Gel Fireplace, a retailer of portable ventless fireplaces, these types of fireplaces are increasing in popularity because they are environmentally friendly and cheaper than traditional fireplaces. However, stylistic choices are sometimes limited when purchasing cheaper ventless fireplaces. Luckily, ventless gel and gas fireplaces can be custom-painted in just a few steps, allowing you to achieve a high-end fireplace aesthetic without breaking the bank.
Instructions
1. Move the fireplace to a garage or other workspace if it is freestanding. If the ventless fireplace is attached to the wall, you'll need to apply painter's tape to the edge of the fireplace so you do not accidentally get paint on the wall.
2. Wash the fireplace with soap and water. Even if your fireplace is brand new, there could still be some dust or grime leftover from the manufacturing process. You need a clean surface for proper paint coverage.
3. Wait for the fireplace to air-dry. If you dry the fireplace with a towel, you risk transferring small fabric particles from your drying cloth onto the clean surface. The surface will usually be dry in about an hour.
4. Apply a coat of general-purpose primer to the surface using a paintbrush. Though it can be tempting to skip the priming to cut costs, you must follow this step for the best results. Most ventless fireplaces are made of ceramic. Ceramic products are often covered in slick gloss and paint will not stick to this surface if it has not been primed.
5. Wait at least two hours for the primer to dry. Depending on the brand of general-purpose primer you are using, you may need to wait longer than two hours. Check the container for more accurate drying times.
6. Paint the fireplace with your choice of custom color and sheen. A regular paintbrush will provide even coverage of your custom color. Use enamel paint for best results.
7. Apply a second coat after two hours if the first coat does not completely cover the primer.
8. Wait at least 48 hours for the paint to dry before using your ventless fireplace.
