Painting a birdhouse can bring some of the beauty of the outdoors inside.
Painting a birdhouse is a craft project that can be fit to any age group or painting skill level. Even if your birdhouse is purely decorative and not functional, you can use it to bring a nature-inspired, garden-theme d cor to an indoor or outdoor space. It is a good idea to draft a design for your birdhouse. A sketch and color plans will help guide you through the painting process.
Instructions
1. Prepare the surface of the wood. Use mild soap and water to remove any dirt or dust from the inside or outside of the birdhouse. Use sandpaper to smooth out any imperfections in the wood. Sanding is recommended for all materials that you plan to paint, including plastic or metal. This will roughen the texture to help the paint adhere without chipping. Use painter's tape to cover any areas on the birdhouse that you do not want to paint.
2. Paint the inside of the birdhouse to complement your design. For example, a contrasting shade to the outside design of the birdhouse will add a pop of color and depth to the design. This is recommended only if you will never use the birdhouse outdoors. Birds would peck at the paint inside the birdhouse, and any toxic materials in the paint could damage their health.
3. Apply a layer of primer to the surface of the birdhouse. This will ensure an evenly colored finish on the outside. If the surface is wood, be sure to follow the direction of the grain to minimize the appearance of brush strokes. If there is no visible grain, simply keep consistent the direction of your brush strokes consistent. Apply a second or third coat as necessary.
4. Add any decorative trim work to the outside of the birdhouse. If you do not plan on using the birdhouse for birds, you may hot-glue ribbon, glitter or paper decorations as desired.
5. Seal the outside of the birdhouse with a polyurethane finish. Once the paint is dry, apply the finish in the same way you applied the paint. Allow it to dry fully before hanging.
