There may be times when setting out an easel and paint supplies for children to express themselves creatively is not ideal. There are numerous free and fun paint games online for children of all ages from the basics of filling in a coloring page to trying their hand at various advanced techniques through simulation.
PBS Kids Coloring
Online painting catered to a younger crowd, the coloring section of PBS Kids provides multiple free options for children to paint online. Using the bucket fill, one-click form of painting, children will paint some of their favorite characters and settings from shows like "Dragon Tales," "The Berenstain Bears" and the "Teletubbies." There are also more advanced painting options, such as Arthur's Art Studio, where children can choose the brush and paint color and must maneuver the mouse to paint the picture, just as if they were painting a real picture. They can also mix colors of paint with a machine for painting with Curious George, or work on the letter recognition skills when they paint by number with the characters of "Super Why."
Art Games
Presented by the education department of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, Art Games is a free online interactive art studio for children ages four to 12.. Children enter Artie's Art House, where they can create a splatter art painting in their own studio or a painting on the easel using a variety of mediums and fun tools. Mixed into the Art House along with the painting are fun games to introduce children to color theory, landscapes, famous artists and famous works of art available in English or Spanish.
The Art Zone
The National Gallery of Art in Washington allows children to create their version of famous portraits and landscapes using the free Faces and Places online paint tool in the kids' area of the website, The Art Zone. Here children choose from famous pictures and recreate portions of the picture, such as a background or specific objects, by painting them on themselves. Children young and old can have fun creating paintings with the BRUSHster tool on The Art Zone, which provides them with the opportunity to simulate various textures and strokes using a full color palette and more than 40 brushes. The Art Zone Paint Box is a simple but fun paint tool that allows children to choose backgrounds for the painting along with various warp effects, while providing tools such as size, transparency, symmetry and strokes for customization.
