Pastel-colored houses from tropical islands influence southern states.
When you're looking to sell your house, spruce it up with a fresh coat of paint to best market your property. In the U.S., home color trends differ from region to region; pastel colors are popular in the South--reflecting island moods--and colors are more conservative in the North. See what colors are used in new housing and learn what is likely to appeal to many buyers in your region.
White
Neutrals in this bedroom have eye appeal.
Barb Schwarz, author of "Home Staging," says that neutrals, white, beige, brown, gray and black, are always a safe choice because they are simple colors to work with. She suggests the color white when used alone or mixed is best for the exterior, interior or trim of a house when staged for selling. For example, when you think of the popularity of vanilla ice cream and how it is relatively easy to make a variety of sundaes, then you can see how neutral, white wall paint makes it easy for potential buyers to envision their own furniture and possessions in your home, making for a quick sale. You can always accessorize with a wider range of colors when you begin with a neutral.
Black
Authors Dana & Turner suggest black shutters on a white, symmetrical house.
Scientifically speaking, white reflects light, making a house look brighter and larger, whereas black is a contrasting color and absorbs light. Julie Dana and Marcia Layton Turner, authors of "Staging Your Home to Sell," suggest that for optimum contrast on a house that is symmetrical, with the front door in the middle with equal windows on both sides, black trim on a white house has a classic look.
For a house that doesn't have a front entrance with equal windows, then a color in a complementary color for the trim is recommended, for example, gray on a white house.
Red
Red roofs have an Old World European charm.
Red in its many varieties is a good color choice when you want to make a bold statement and stage your house for selling. European immigrants brought a fondness for their homeland and skilled craftsmanship to the U.S. to transform the look of homes to suit their tastes. An example of this influence are Mediterranean-style homes that use red tiles or terra cotta roofs for Old World charm.
Red is used as brickwork for a patio, stain for a deck, or even the front door as an accent to the body and trim of a house. If there's an attached barn, painting it red will give a house the look of having an extension. When designing interior spaces, red works well for accessorizing with lamps, pillows, sofa throws, drapes and rugs.
