Work on fine motor skills and language with a drawing game.
If you find yourself surrounded by bored children, it may be time to introduce a drawing game or two. The games require little more than a pen and paper but will entertain your restless brood for the afternoon. And while they giggle the day away, you'll know that they are developing their fine motor skills and creativity.
My House
Provide children with a simple coloring sheet that has at least five different sections to color. A picture of a house with grass, a door, windows, roof and chimney would work well. Ask questions that have two to three answers. Assign a color to each answer. For example, "Do you have pets? Color your window blue if the answer is yes or red if the answer is no." Other questions could include: Do you live in a house or apartment? Do you have siblings? Do you like cake or ice cream the best? When the pictures are complete, ask the children to compare and contrast their houses.
Blindfolded Artist
Hang a large piece of plain paper on the wall. Blindfold one child and give him a marker. Tell him to draw a simple object such as a tree, boat or doghouse. The other children can suggest additional objects to add to the picture. The finished picture may not look like the intended object, but it should inspire lots of giggles.
Progressive Picture
Divide the children into teams of three. Fold a piece of paper into thirds so only the top section is visible. Tell the children that the object of the game is to draw a person together. The catch is they can't see their teammates' work. The first child has five minutes to draw a head in the top section of the paper while his teammates look away. At the end of the five minutes, he will fold over the top section, revealing only the middle section. Now the second child has five minutes to draw the middle of a person. Continue with the third child until the drawing is complete. The finished pictures can be hilarious.
