Paint opposite walls one shade darker than the rest of the room.
Paint is the least expensive way to change the way a room looks. Paint and painting tools are affordable and easy to use, so even a novice decorator can paint a room. Painting walls in different hues is a simple way to play up a color scheme in your home. While painting one accent wall a different color adds a sense of drama, painting opposite walls a shade lighter or darker than the rest of the room can make the room look larger and give it a sense of depth.
Instructions
Prepare the Walls
1. Take everything off the two opposite walls you plan to paint. Remove switch plate covers from electrical outlets and light switches. Move all the furniture to the center of the room and cover it with a sheet or tarp. Spread the drop cloth on the floor.
2. Wash the opposite walls with a large sponge, dampened with a solution of warm water and mild detergent.
3. Patch any holes in the walls to be painted. Spread Spackle over the holes with the Spackle knife. Let the Spackle dry and sand the patched areas until they are smooth.
4. Use tape to mask the areas you will not paint. Tape the adjacent walls from top to bottom at the corners. Mask the ceiling or crown molding, the baseboard molding and any window or door trim located along the opposite walls.
Paint the Walls
5. Cut in the edges of each wall. Using the 3-inch trim paintbrush, paint a strip of the new color along the top, bottom and sides of each wall and around any windows or doors.
6. Paint the rest of each wall with the roller. Start at the top of one wall and roll a "W" onto the surface. Fill in the gaps with paint. Paint all the way to the edges of the areas you painted with the brush.
7. Let the paint dry thoroughly according to the directions on the can. Apply a second coat if needed. Pull the masking tape from the walls and trim. Replace the switch plates and outlet covers.
