Use the recommended rollers for the best possible finish.

Ralph Lauren Regent Metallics paints add a subtle, colorful richness and shimmer to any wall or column. Inspired by military and heraldic trim, the paint is available in 40 colors. According to the Ralph Lauren website, one of the keys to achieving the best possible paint finish is to use their specialty paint rollers and roller covers developed especially for this line of paint.

Instructions

1. Wash the column using soap, water and a sponge to remove any stains. Rinse using clean water to remove any soap residue.

2. Apply masking tape to the baseboard and to any parts of the column you will not cover with the Regent Metallics paint. Cover the existing paint with a latex primer applied with the large roller. Let this dry overnight.

3. Paint a 9-inch border along the top, corners and bottom of the column with the paint. Use long strokes with the 4 1/2-inch roller. For hard-to-reach places, use a dabbing motion with the roller.

4. Put the Regents Matellic cover onto the 9-inch roller and use it to fill in the rest of the column with the paint. Work in 20-by-20-inch sections from the top of the column. Apply the paint in overlapping "V" shapes over this area. After each section, reload the roller with paint. Do not overlap the sections if possible.

5. Run the roller down the entire column, from top to bottom, in continuous strokes when you've completed one side of the column. Do not add paint to the roller for this.

6. Repeat this for the other sides of the column. You've now finished the base coat. Allow this to dry for four hours or overnight. The paint finish will look uneven.

7. Apply a second coat in the same way on all sides of the column. Allow to dry for four hours. Remove masking tape by lifting the edge of the tape with a razor knife and pulling gently on the tape. This ensures the tape will not pull off any paint.

8. Paint the baseboards of the column by applying the paint evenly in one direction using the 3-inch brush. Leave a thick edge at the end of the stroke and start the next stroke here. This will blend the brush strokes together and avoid a harsh edge.

9. Allow the first coat to dry for four hours and apply a second coat.
