Some special paint jobs can take extra time, which needs to be reflected in the bid.
To bid on a job as a painting contractor you have to know estimate material and labor costs. Knowing how much materials will cost and how long it will take your painting crew to do a job can allow you to place a competitive bid, increasing the likelihood of landing a job and turning a profit.
Instructions
1. Present yourself in a professional manner at all times to the potential employer. Schedule a time to bid for the job and be punctual. Ask the potential employer to show you everything under consideration for painting. After you have seen the project, ask the potential employer to give you a few minutes to make some measurements.
2. Make a list of each area that needs to be painted. As you walk through each area, consider the time it will take your crew to prepare and paint it. If wall patch work needs to be done, determine how long it will take any wet mud materials to dry before the crew can sand, prime and paint over them.
3. Determine the materials needed for each area of the job. Measure the width and length of every area, and multiply those numbers together with a calculator to determine how much primer and paint needs to be purchased.
4. Ask potential employers what type of primer and paint they want used. If they don't know, provide them with at least three different paint brands, stating the pros and cons of each.
5. Ask the potential employer how many different paint sheens and colors they want. Calculate how much extra time it will take your painting crew to wash up after using one color and switching to the next.
6. Total the time and materials and provide the potential employer with an itemized bid, breaking down each area to show the labor involved and the materials. Offer the potential employer the option of paying for the materials himself and then paying only for the crew's hourly wages.
7. Tell the potential employer when your crew will be available to start the job. Provide an estimate of how long it will take to do the job and ask for half of the payment upfront to pay for materials and the other half when the job is completed.
