Painting with the Wagner Power Painter can be a hassle free experience.
At one time, painting the house was a terrible chore. Plans would have to be made months in advance and the actual work itself would take weeks to finish properly. Often the coats painted onto a home would appear uneven and would have to be retouched. Wagner Power Painters are a light, fast, and affordable way to paint homes and projects evenly and without hassle. Still, there are several tips that will benefit anyone using a Wagner Power Painter.
Wide and Even Flow
It is important with any model of Wagner Power Painter to practice flow control. It can be difficult to gauge the coverage of the paint job, and the tendency is to move slowly over the surface. This can lead to over painting, since the Power Painter releases so much paint at one time. Solve this problem by using the standard 0.8 mm head whenever possible (the Power Painter motor was designed to work best with this spray head) and by spraying a test line on a piece of scrap. This test line will show you what your spray area will be and the type of flow to expect from your gun with the type of paint you are using. From here, use the gun like a roller along that area, spraying in quick, even waves along the surface.
Thinning
Clogging can be an issue with the Wagner Power Painter and the most common solution is thinning. While thinning can help tremendously when using regular paint in a sprayer, there are still many small particles commonly found in paint that paint thinner will not eliminate. To remove these small particles, you can filter the paint through a nylon stocking or piece of cheesecloth. Fasten the stocking or cloth over the entire opening of the paint can and turn it over quickly so the paint pours into a separate container (a bucket will do.) The paint will take up to an hour to filter through to the bucket, but in the end, the Power Painter will benefit from far fewer clogs.
Clean Immediately
To avoid clogs and to ensure an even spray every time, it is important to clean the Wagner Power Painter thoroughly after every use (even if you're only breaking for lunch.) Clean the spray can with soap and water if you're using latex paint, or oil paint cleaner (mineral spirits) if you use oil-based paint. Also, be sure to flush the gun portion with clean solution.
