Interior Planning Color Plan Ideas

Choose a palette of colors that soothe, invite or excite you.

Choosing a color palette for your home is as uncomplicated as choosing colors you like or as complicated as having far too many choices to make. Choose three or four contrasting or complementary colors to use throughout your home, or select a modern, crisp monochromatic scheme for use in a large space. Do bring in pops of color to avoid a color palette that appears drab or one dimensional.

Monochromatic

Different shades of the same color produce a monochromatic color scheme.

Choose a monochromatic scheme for an open concept home. Paint larger rooms with darker hues to make the rooms look warm and inviting. Smaller rooms can take lighter hues on the walls to make them look larger and more open. Add color with furniture and accessories. Don't be afraid to bring in texture and patterned fabric to a monochromatic scheme as they add depth and interest to your palette.

Theme Palettes

Choose a color palette that transports you to another place.

Chose three or four colors that remind you of a favorite place or time. Select quiet cool colors of the mountains in summer, lavish tropical colors of an island landscape or a palette of colors found in the desert southwest. Allow the colors to travel throughout your home in wall colors, furnishings and accessories. Make certain that all the colors you choose have a similar saturation and work well when assembled side by side using color swatches. Bring in patterns that contain the colors to add depth to the palette.

Complementary Colors

Complimentary colors are found opposite each other on a color wheel.

Complementary colors are found opposite each other on a color wheel. Colors found in nature and colors that are familiar fit in well with a complementary theme. Think collegiate colors. Blue and gold, red and green or blue and orange are examples of complementary color schemes. Use bold primary colors or a more diluted pastel palette. Choose two or three colors within a theme to run throughout your home. Use one color as an anchor color, and use the others for accents throughout your home. Take care not to add too much color in one space. When used incorrectly, complementary colors appear bold and off-putting.
