Fresh paint Aboriginal Art With Corel Painter

Painter's layers make it easy to try different techniques with aboriginal artwork.

Aboriginal art is art made by a region's indigenous people, such as the native Americans or the Maori of New Zealand. The art these and other aboriginal people made and continue to make varies widely from one culture to the next, but you can discern commonalities after looking at a variety of aboriginal art. Observing aboriginal art is an essential ingredient in creating your own aboriginal style works in Corel Painter. One advantage of using Painter to make aboriginal art is the ability to experiment with different approaches until you find one that fits your interpretation of aboriginal art.

Instructions

1. Trace your hand on a piece of paper. You'll make a hand stencil from this image in Painter. Hand stencils are found frequently in aboriginal art, including the earliest known art on the walls of caves in France.

2. Scan the hand outline into your computer. Or, take a picture of the outline with a digital camera and import it to your computer.

3. Load the image into Painter by clicking the "File" menu's "Load" command and navigating to the hand image.

4. Click "Save As" under the "File" menu, and select "RIFF" to save the hand image as one that allows layers. Layers are needed to make a cave wall background.

5. Click the "Color sets" palette at screen right, then click the first button at the bottom of the palette. Select "Open color set," then click the "Earth tones" file in the folder that appears. This step loads earth colors to paint the hand with.

6. Click one of the red swatches, which represents red ochre. This is a color commonly found in aboriginal art.

7. Click the brush tool in the left toolbar, then paint the hand stencil by dragging the mouse away from the outline of the hand. Don't paint inside the outlines. The net effect should be of the hand glowing. Refer to sample hand stencils such as the one at Aboriginal Art Online. This step completes the foreground image.

8. Press "Ctrl+A," then "Ctrl+C" to copy the hand to the clipboard. Press "Ctrl+V" to make a layer that duplicates the hand. In the next few steps you'll move this layer atop a background image of a cave wall.

9. Click the eye icon in the "Canvas" item of the "Layers" palette to hide the canvas layer.

10. Download an image of a cave wall from a website such as Lascaux. Save the image as "wall.jpg."

11. Load "wall.jpg" into Painter using the instructions from Step 3.

12. Press "Ctrl+A," then click on the hand image and press "Ctrl+V" to paste the cave wall as a new layer in the hand image document.

13. Click the "Move down" command in the "Layer" menu to place the cave wall image behind the hand image.

14. Click the layer containing the duplicated hand image in the "Layers" palette.

15. Click the left palette's eraser tool, then drag the mouse over all non-painted parts of the hand. This will expose the cave wall background. Your aboriginal artwork will be complete when you've finished erasing all unpainted parts of the hand.
