A faux metallic texture to walls creates a dramatic statement that is warm and inviting and adds excitement to any room. In the kitchen, rich copper brings a feel of old world beauty. Decorating bathrooms with silver or gold accents brightens the room and leaves a clean fresh look.
Instructions
1. Choose the metallic glaze first as it will determine what color of paint you need for a base coat. Unlike other glazing or faux finishes, each finish requires a specific color for the base coat to create the look of metal.
2. Select a reddish brown base coat for copper metallic finishes. This will create a rich copper finish that looks and feels like the real thing.
3. Choose dark mustard for gold finishes to complement the metallic glaze.
4. Select a gray base coat to bring out a rich color in a silver metallic glaze.
5. Prepare the wall for painting by washing it with a mild detergent to remove any residue on the wall that may prevent the base coat from adhering to the wall.
6. Move furniture away from the area to be painted and tape windows, doors and molding with painter's tape. Cover the floor with a drop cloth.
7. Apply the base coat with a roller and allow it to dry thoroughly. Be sure you cover the entire wall and that you get all corners.
8. Pour glaze into a clean roller pan or shallow container. Dip the sea sponge into the glaze. Pat it onto paper towels or newspaper to remove excess glaze.
9. Apply the glaze coat in a random pattern by daubing the sponge onto the wall. Do not try to cover all areas, as you will want some of the base coat to show. Apply glaze heavier in some areas to simulate the look of metal patina.
10. Step back and view your work from a distance to see how it will look as a finished project. Adjust your technique according to your taste.
11. Work in small sections, but do not stop in the middle of the project. For best results the entire area should be completed in the same work session. It is difficult to duplicate the pattern and texture if you stop and try again later.
