The Best Budget Paint
Paint is the most dramatic and least expensive way to redecorate a room. There are many budget paints marketed. To choose one, consider which room you will be painting and which type of finish you need before proceeding to color and manufacturer selection.
Behr Premium Plus
At about $25 per gallon, in 2010, this budget-friendly paint is almost half the price of other premium paints. It's sold at the Home Depot. The satin is best for interior living spaces; it can be cleaned over and over without fading, and the colors go on true to their chip. The Premium Plus Enamel is a semi-gloss best for kitchens and bathrooms, but tends to fade. Behr also makes paint in flat and eggshell finishes, which are even flatter than the satin and therefore harder to clean.
Using Behr's online tools, you can choose from 21 different color families and save the color samples you like. There are also virtual rooms where you can plan your paint scheme.
Valspar Ultra Premium
Valspar costs around $25 per gallon in 2010 and is sold at Lowe's and Ace Hardware stores. The Valspar Ultra Premium is a highly-rated paint with a color that will last a long time, even in rooms that receive a lot of bright sunlight, in either the semi-gloss or satin finishes. They also make flat, eggshell, high gloss and ceiling paint finishes. All are low VOC (volatile organic compounds) and resistant to mildew.
Valspar's online tools let you virtually paint rooms and offer inspiration wheels by ambiance, nature, trends or architecture. The company also has a paint calculator on its website, so you can calculate how much paint to purchase.
Kilz Casual Colors
Kilz Casual Colors offers a line of guaranteed one-coat paint, provided the painter follows the Kilz label instructions for application. Sold at Wal-Mart, these paints are the least expensive of the list, costing around $19 in 2010. These paints do fade faster than premium paint, but if you plan to change the color every few years, as for a child's room, it is a worthwhile investment.
The line offers flat, satin, semi-gloss, high-gloss and ceiling paints. The semi-gloss is the most durable and mildew resistant, best for kitchens and bathrooms. The paints come in dozens of colors, and the Kilz website offers suggestions and ideas to get you started.
Olympic Paint
Olympic Paint, sold in 2010 for around $20 per gallon at home improvement and hardware stores, has a product line that includes a great flat-finish paint that resists fading. If you're looking to paint a sunny living space and don't want a semi-gloss paint, then Olympic might be the right paint for you. Olympic's online paint tools allow you to try out colors in a variety of photo settings, such as bathrooms, bedrooms and living rooms.
Olympic manufactures paints in these finishes: flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss and high gloss.
