Brighten up your porch with a fresh coat of paint.
A porch is the introduction to your house. It is a welcome to you as a homeowner as well as to your guests, and it has a significant impact on your home's curb appeal. Applying a fresh coat of paint to your porch can give your whole home a facelift in just a couple of days' work. With a variety of durable paint choices designed for outdoor use, nothing is stopping you from taking your tired or plain porch from drab to fab.
Instructions
1. Choose a paint type and color. Most paint companies offer porch paint in a selection of basic colors that have been designed to resist scuffing, fading, mildew, cracking and peeling.
2. Wash your porch using a mop and a cleaning mixture of half a cup of TSP (trisodium phosphate) per two gallons of water (check the directions on the TSP container, as ratios may vary). Use a rag with the mixture to clean railings and posts. Rinse the porch with your hose or buckets of water, and allow it to dry completely.
3. Sand your porch with a fine sandpaper, and wipe it clean with a tack cloth. Apply the painter's tape anywhere that the porch meets with the house to protect the exterior material of your house from getting any unwanted paint on it.
4. Paint the entire porch with a primer of acrylic latex paint. Make sure the paint doesn't form drips as it dries.
5. Allow the primer coat to completely dry before applying the porch paint; this will prevent any bubbling or premature chipping. Primer drying times vary, so follow the directions on the can. Cooler temperatures and humid weather can extend drying times.
6. Paint the entire porch with the first coat of the porch paint you chose. Make sure the coverage is even and the paint does not form drips as it dries. Wait for this first coat to fully dry before moving on.
7. Add the second coat of porch paint, making sure to avoid dripping. Allow this coat to completely dry before using your porch.
