Change Ugly Tiles Inside A Bathroom

Tiles that are still in good condition can be changed rather than replaced.

If the look of the tiles in your bathroom is ugly or grimy, or the color is outdated, then it may be time to change the appearance of the tiles. While a full retiling project may not fit in everyone's budget, often you can change ugly tiles in your bathroom by cleaning them well and applying a new color to the surface of the existing tile. Depending on the size of your tiled area, this can be a long or short process. Plan to spend a day changing your tiles to give yourself plenty of time.

Instructions

1. Wash the tiles to remove dirt, using a tile cleaner. Apply pressure with a scrub brush as needed to lift grime. Rinse any cleaner and dirt away, and dry the tiles thoroughly with an old towel.

2. Sand over the surface of your tile with sandpaper to remove any sheen and to create a rough surface the primer can adhere to. Wipe the tile with a damp sponge, and vacuum up any dust or dirt loosened by the sanding process. Dry the tiles with a towel once again.

3. Run painter's tape around the area of your tile to avoid painting walls or fixtures by mistake. Lay out a drop cloth, if desired, to protect others areas of the bathroom.

4. Apply tile primer in a smooth, even coat over the surface of your tiles to cover them completely. Allow the tile to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

5. Select the color of paint you want to use on your tiles, and apply it in a smooth, even coat over the primer. Apply a second coat over the first for full coverage if necessary. Leave the paint to dry for as long as stated on the packaging. Remove the drop cloth and painter's tape.
