Painting Suggestions For Kitchen & Family Room

Open kitchens, like this one, typically connect to the living room.

Whether your kitchen and living room are separate or create one big space, the colors you choose for main rooms help define the entire space of your home. You can paint either room with a variety of paint finishes, including flats or glosses, but glosses tend to work best in moist areas like the kitchen.

Keep It Neutral

For a simple scheme, keep it neutral. Use a pale beige shade of white or other basic color to cover the walls, and brighten up the space with bold fabric accents. For a bolder look stay neutral, but use a darker shade such as chocolate on your walls, and pair it with lighter colored accents. To create a more contemporary look, use a neutral monochromatic color scheme, like grays to black, in your kitchen and living room.

Warm It up

Make your living room or kitchen space a comforting, welcoming haven by warming up your walls. Keep it mellow with a shade of pale yellow or an earthy brown. For a bolder look, coat your walls with a deep red or burnt orange shade. Pair bolder colors with lighter furniture or neutral-colored accents to keep from overpowering the space with too much color.

Add Complements

If you're looking for a bit of contrast, add complements to your kitchen. Use one complementary color on the walls, such as a bold yellow, and the secondary complementary color, like blue, as the accent color. Paint your cabinets, beadboard or other elements with the second color to integrate the space. For a unusual, bold wall make a focal wall by striping it with your two complementary colors.

Get Creative

In recent years, the rules of kitchen and living room colors have gone by the wayside, so get creative. Try colors you never would have tried together. Paint your kitchen cabinets a bold blue, red or mustard yellow. Pair the look with deep brown or mocha-colored walls. Tape off a wall, and create a diamond pattern on a single wall; or if you're good with a brush, make a mural.
