Many people feel that a painting is not complete until it has been properly framed. While this may not be true of all pieces, knowledge of frame your favorite artwork can certainly help to enhance the piece. Framing a painting begins with selecting the best frame, and is only complete when you have hung your frame in the ideal spot. The following steps will help you display your art in the most appealing way possible.
Instructions
1. Select the best frame for your artwork. A very busy, detailed piece will look best in a plain, solid colored frame. Simpler pieces, such as still life of a single subject, can be enhanced with a more ornate and detailed frame.
2. Select matting if needed. If your painting is smaller than the frame you will need to place matting around it. The margins around the sides and top of the artwork should be equal with the margin at the bottom slightly larger.
3. Install your painting in the frame. Slip the painting into the frame from the back. Cover the back of the painting with paper or cardboard to prevent the collection of dust. Secure the backing onto the frame with clips or button backs (these are usually attached to the frame).
4. Select the ideal placement for your painting. Your painting will look best when illuminated from the same direction as the light in the picture. If the artwork depicts a scene that is lit from the left, place your painting to the right of a window or other light source.
